The data
Do they really follow back?
Published 31 October 2026 · Data from a 7-day crawl of X
The short version
- When someone asks to connect, reply and follow. That’s the move. 4 in 5 people who did both were followed back.
- Replying without following barely beats a stranger: 16% against a 9% background.
- Be early. Replies in the first 3 hours got followed back 71–73% of the time; later ones 46–47%.
- Tech and AI authors are pickier: 36% overall, 57% when you follow.
What we measured
Every day, people on X ask others to connect. We wanted one number: if you answer one of those posts, how likely is the author to follow you back?
From our 7-day crawl we took 16 such posts that were 2–3 days old, so the dust had settled. We skipped spam authors and spread the pick across niches, author sizes and how many replies each post got. Under each post we took up to 15 direct replies, spread evenly over time, and checked two things for each pair: did the replier follow the author, and does the author now follow the replier. As a control, we checked whether each author follows 2 people who replied to other posts in the sample.
The numbers
| Group | Followed back | Pairs |
|---|---|---|
| Replier follows the author | 80.6% | 104 / 129 |
| Replier doesn’t follow the author | 15.8% | 9 / 57 |
| All replies | 60.8% | 113 / 186 |
| Control: replier from another post | 9.4% | 3 / 32 |
95% interval for all replies: 54–68%, or 47–75% if you count each post as one unit, which is the honest way with 16 posts.
By the size of the post
Busy posts follow back less: an author with 80 replies can’t follow everyone. Fresh, small posts are where you stand out. That’s why LetsConnect shows you the freshest posts first.
By the size of the author
Bigger accounts don’t ignore you. People with 10k followers who ask to connect mean it.
How we did it
- Read-only: we looked at public posts and public follow relationships. 243 requests in total, at a slow pace. We didn’t follow, reply or like anything.
- Posts aged 50–70 hours, authors without spam signals and with at least 3 replies, picked deterministically (not by hand) from four reply-count buckets.
- Up to 15 direct replies per post, evenly spread over time. The author’s own replies and our own account were left out.
What this can’t tell you
- It’s a small sample. 16 posts and 186 pairs. One author can swing a bucket. Read the buckets as direction, not as exact numbers.
- We don’t know when each follow happened. X doesn’t show it, so some follows may be older than the reply. The 9% control is our estimate of that background; people who reply to a given author may know them better than random, so the real background could be a bit higher.
- These were organic repliers, often bigger and verified accounts, not LetsConnect users. A brand-new account should expect lower numbers, especially in tech.
- X hides some replies on busy posts, usually the low-quality ones. The hidden tail likely follows back less, so the real average is probably a little lower.
We’ll run it again with more posts and publish the update here. Questions about the data: hello@tryletsconnect.com.
81% is what happens when you reply and follow, early, under the right posts. LetsConnect finds those posts for you and drafts the reply in your voice.
